A boat was observed by the Coxswain drifting out to sea with three people on board, two on the stern trying to paddle back to shore. Because of the strong SW wind they were not making any headway. Coxswain informed SHS and it was decided to launch the ILB to assist. Once on scene the ILB discovered that the boats engine had a cracked cylinder head and the auxiliary engine would not start. ILB towed the boat to Traeth Bychan.

12th September 2003

ILB was launched to a small fishing boat with engine failure. The Coxswain and SHS had observed the vessel just off Moelfre Island. The occupant was trying to paddle against the tide but not making any headway. An anchor was deployed by the casualty and that stopped his drift. Another vessel passed and the casualty tried to wave for assistance but the other vessel did not notice. It was then decided to launch the ILB to assist. The ILB towed the boat to Traeth Bychan beach.

13th September 2003

The ILB was launched to a report of a man in the water hanging on to his capsized sailing dinghy in Red Wharf Bay. Whilst on-route a second report was received that another small rowing boat had launched to help the man but was also having difficulties due to the SW force 6 wind. When the ILB arrived on scene both casualties were found in the rowing boat and were safely towed to the shore. The ILB then recovered the sailing dinghy.

12th November 2003

The ILB launched to a report of a Jetski in difficulty just off Bull Bay. The ILB was on scene 25 minutes after launching and found the Jetski with two people onboard. It was found that a rope had fouled the jet drive so the ILB towed the Jetski in to Bull Bay. Once safely ashore the ILB returned to station. Wind SW - 4.

All-Weather Lifeboat Services This Year.

Saturday 15th March 2003

The Robert and Violet launched on Saturday the 15th of March to a Mayday call off Point Lynas. The yacht Bacharat had a man overboard and was unable to retrieve him due to the weather conditions. On arrival at the casualty the lifeboat found the man face down in the water with no lifejacket on. Crew members Paul Haydock and Robert Cole who had donned dry suits, entered the water to attend to the casualty. Robert held the casualties head clear of the water whilst Paul gave mouth to mouth, which was very difficult due to the three meter swell and breaking sea. Within minutes the Seaking helicopter from Valley arrived and winched the casualty up and off to hospital. Sadly the man was pronounced dead on arrival. Once the Helicopter cleared we picked up our crew from the water, who were by now exhausted.

The yacht had been in company with another vessel that had also turned around to try and help. Unfortunately we found that both boats had now fouled their props with MOB lines. We went to yacht Bacharat first and found the remaining sailor in a poor way, so it was decided to put a crewman (Nigel Musgrave) onboard to take over. Once Nigel had the vessel under control and heading away from the shore we attended yacht "Dream weaver" who seemed to have the situation under control and was quit happy to sail to Amlwch where we told him to stand off until we could tow him in. We then headed back to Bacharat where the remaining sailor was now complaining of no feeling in his hands. We transferred the oxygen and asked if he wanted to be airlifted but he refused so Nigel was told to sail the boat to Amlwch also. We went on ahead and towed “Dream weaver” in to the port and then escorted Bacharat in under her own power because the rope had come clear. Once in Amlwch port two crew off “Dream weaver” and the one off Bacharat were treated by Ambulance paramedics for cold and shock.

The Lifeboat had to stay in Amlwch due to the Easterly swell on the station slipway.

For this service Robert Cole and Paul Haydock received letters of thanks from the Operations Director R.N.L.I.

31st May 2003
The Yacht Flute found a pleasure boat adrift and sent out a Pan-Pan Message, which was answered by Holyhead CG. They had been adrift from 22:00 hrs on the 30:5:03 until the time they were discovered by the Yacht. The Lifeboat was launched to a position given by the Yacht. The casualty was found to have engine failure; the starting cord had broken so the engine could not be started. They were towed and landed safely ashore at Traeth Bychan by the lifeboat.

12th July 2003
SHS was informed by Holyhead Coastguard that the Motor Launch "Vim" was adrift at position 53*:26.00 N 004*:13.13 W North of Point Lynas with engine failure, with two persons on board. Request launch of ALB on arrival it was found that the casualty had been able to start one engine but could only proceed at 3kts. Decision was made to tow the casualty in to Amlwch Port where they were secured safely and the ALB returned to station.

17th July 2003
Request launch of ALB by HHCG Mayday call received from a dive vessel with a missing diver. The ALB was launched and on arrival at given position carried out a thorough search of whole area nothing was found. The Diving vessel and Helicopters 122 and FLIR Helicopter Ireland were also involved in search plus other vessels in the area. Nothing was found and at 22:10 the search was terminated by Holyhead Coastguard to be resumed again following morning.
Police Divers would be searching under water at the location. ALB would be tasked to continue search at 08:00hrs 18:7:03

18th July 2003

3rd September 2003
The ALB was out on Inspection and exercise, at 15:20 the Yacht Tranquillity was heard calling Holyhead Coastguard for assistance they had developed an engine problem. HHCG called for any vessel in the area to assist. Moelfre Lifeboat responded, they had the yacht visible and were alongside at 15:25. A crew member boarded the vessel and found that the main fuel pipe from tank to engine was fractured and there was a considerable amount of fuel in the bilges. Decision was made to tow the casualty into the Menai Strait. The Beaumaris ILB was tasked to take over the tow after the ALB had entered into the Menai Strait. At 15:56 Beaumaris ILB took over the tow and proceeded for Beaumaris where the casualty was moored and the three people taken safely ashore. Moelfre ALB carried on with exercise and re housed at 16:30.

Shouts 2002

The Robert and Violet launched on Monday 28th January 2002 to the aid of a small yacht in difficulty off St David's point near Benllech bay. The Yacht had broken free of its mooring and drifted down the channel from Red Wharf, grounding near St David's point. The owner managed to get aboard at low water but found that as the tide came in he could make no head way against the force 8 SW wind. An anchor was deployed which held the boat until the lifeboat arrived on scene just after high water. Crew member Alun Davies was transferred to the yacht and helped the owner to make fast the tow. The yacht was then towed to Moelfre and put on the lifeboat moorings until the wind eased off on Wednesday. The yacht is now safely back on new moorings in Red wharf bay.

Crew - Alan Owen - Dwynwen Parry - Nigel Musgrave.

The Robert and Violet launched at 15.21 on the 9th of April to the assistance of a yacht in difficulty off Traeth Bychan beach. The yacht was at anchor but had a line around his propeller. Because of the Easterly wind and his close proximity to the beach he was unable to sail out of the bay. The mechanic (Dave Ford) and crew member Dave Jones (jnr) were put aboard to asses the situation and to try and free the prop. Meanwhile a tow was made fast to the yacht and then the lifeboat towed the yacht out in to deeper water. The mechanic eventually managed to free the prop and the yacht was able to make its own way back to the Menai Straights. Lifeboat re-housed and ready for service at 16.30.

Crew - Anthony Barclay - Dave Ford (Tenby) - Dwynwen Parry - Dave Jones (jnr) - Robert Cole

Moelfre ILB launched at 19.00 on the 23rd of April to the assistance of a small sailing dinghy East of Moelfre Island. The vessel had been under observation by the Coxswain for some time and it was decided to launch the ILB as all did not seem well. On arrival at the casualty it was found that the two occupants of the sailing dinghy were very distressed and very cold. The ILB rushed the casualties to the nearest beach and were received by Moelfre Coastguard who placed the casualties in their 4x4 to warm them up. The casualties refused medical assistance so were taken to the Coastguard station for a warm cup of tea. Meanwhile the ILB towed the sailing dinghy to Traeth Bychan beach and then returned to station. Refuelled and ready for service at 19.50.

The Robert and Violet launched at 14.30 on the 15th of May to the assistance of a small fishing boat reported to be in difficulty off Bull Bay. On arrival it was found that the vessels outboard engine had failed, and because of the strong wind and tide plus a large swell the three male occupants were unable to row back to shore. The three men were taken aboard the lifeboat and the vessel taken under tow to Bull Bay. They were very glad to be back ashore.

Crew - Anthony Barclay - John Aldridge (Padstow) - Nathan Griffiths (Barmouth) - Dwynwen Parry - Alwyn Rowlands.

The Robert and Violet launched at 23.30 on the 26th May to stand by a 3000 ton tanker 6 miles north of the Skerries light house. The Coastguard were worried that the vessel might come ashore with the tide, so Moelfre and Holyhead lifeboats were asked to stand by the vessel until she managed to get her engines going again. At 02.35 the Moelfre lifeboat was released because the tide had turned and the ship was now drifting away from the Anglesey coast line. Holyhead lifeboat stayed on scene until the vessel got underway at 03.00. Moelfre lifeboat arrived back at station at 04.00.

Crew - Anthony Barclay - Rod Pace - Michael Williams - Alan Owen - Dave Jones - Dave Jones (jnr) - Vince Jones.

The Robert and Violet launched at 00.30 on the 17th of June to the aid of a 32ft yacht 11 miles NE of Moelfre. The yacht was on passage from Liverpool to Caernarfon with two persons on board but had lost engine power and was experiencing difficulty sailing in the worsening weather conditions. Once the Lifeboat was on scene it was decided to transfer a crew member on to the yacht as the skipper could not manage on his own and his wife who was disabled was down below. By now the wind was reaching force 10 at times, which made the transfer very difficult indeed. After quite a few attempts at getting near the yacht 2nd Coxswain Rod Pace managed to jump across and the lifeboat was put full astern to avoid damaging the yacht. Rod then made his way forward and managed with some difficulty to make a tow fast. The lifeboat then proceeded to tow the yacht back to the shelter of Moelfre Bay. Because of the weather conditions it was only possible to tow at very slow speed but the yacht was still very lively. The yacht was eventually safe on the lifeboat mooring at about 04.30, a rough passage for all.

Crew - Anthony Barclay - Rod Pace - Michael Williams - Dave Jones - Dave Jones (jnr) - Vince Jones - Gary Roberts

Well done lads, a good job well done.

The ILB towed the dinghy to Traeth Bychan beach and returned to station.

Crew - Alan Owen - Dwynwen Parry - Paul Haydock.

The Robert and Violet launched at 14.55 on the 24th of June to the aid of a 32ft sunseeker about four miles north of Moelfre. The Robert and Violet launched at 09.00 on the 1st of July to the aid of a 55ft trawler 16 miles NE of Amlwch. The trawler had suffered engine or gearbox failure and was in need of assistance. Once on scene the lifeboat was able to make fast a tow and headed for Amlwch. Due to the weather conditions and the weight of the vessel very slow progress was made. The trawler was eventually made fast in Amlwch port and the lifeboat returned to station arriving back at 14.30 with some very nice fish for dinner.

Crew - Anthony Barclay - Vince Jones - Gary Roberts - Dwynwen Parry - Robert Cole - Alwyn Rowlands - Nigel Musgrave (ET)

The Robert and Violet launched 07.30hrs on the 15th of July to the aid of a yacht 6 miles NW of Amlwch. The yacht had fouled her prop with a large fishing net and was unable to make much headway because of the lack of wind. It was decided by the Coastguard to launch the Moelfre Lifeboat as a couple of large merchant vessels had come very close to the casualty. By the time the lifeboat arrived at the casualty the wind had increased so the yacht was able to sail as far as the entrance to Amlwch port where she was taken alongside the lifeboat and in to the port. Once alongside, the lifeboat crew were able to clear the yachts prop and then the lifeboat returned to station.

Moelfre SHS consulted RNLI Operations at Poole because there were no persons suspected to he on board and therefore no danger to life. A decision was made that it would he wiser to launch. The Yacht could have caused considerable damage to other vessels and if it had gone out to sea would have been a danger to navigation. ALB was launched and on arrival found the Yacht with no persons on board floundering in the channel. With difficulty on account of the weather the coxswain managed to get one crew member on board the vessel and a tow was made. The ALB arrived back at station and secured the yacht on station RNLI mooring. The owner visited the station later that evening.

22nd August 2000

Report of Jetski in trouble off Bull Bay.

The ALB was launched and on arrival on scene found that the Jet Ski was trapped on the side of the rocks by the surf. The two persons were in the water hanging on to the Jet Ski, it was possible that they could have climbed ashore but they were reluctant to abandon the Jet Ski.

HHCG contacted SHS and requested launch of the ALB to take out a doctor.

The ALB was launched-doctor taken out and casualty was treated.

The reason for sending the ALB and not the ILB was because stability was required alongside the ship for boarding and also in case the casualty had to be brought ashore.

The vessel was on anchor 2mls North of boathouse.

4th September 2000

Lifeboat launched to a report of red flares being fired between Point Lynas and Amlwch Port. On arrival at point Lynas Lifeboat instructed to commence search along the coast. ILB shouts 2000

9th January 2000

Station Coxswain reported to SHS that he had spotted wreckage in the tide drifting a few cables off the boathouse. His main concern was a fairly new Perry Buoy among the wreckage. 23rdApril 2000

Holyhead CG contacted SHS requesting launch of ILB report of a boat in trouble off Moelfre. Position Unknown, later ILB were given a position that the casualty were off Point Lynas and that it was a 24ft Yacht. ILB searched on a North Westerly course towards Point Lynas but could still not detect Yacht. Due to fading Light SHS decided to launch Moelfre ALB to assist with the search. When the ILB was due North of Amlwch the Yacht was sighted approx 3 miles to the North of Middle Mouse, sighting was reported to HHCG. ILB arrived along side the Yacht and confirmed it to be the one in trouble. The casualty was approx 9 miles NW of the first estimated position. Crew man Michael Williams and Neil Snowden boarded the vessel and assisted the owner to lower the flogging mainsail lowered the boom and stowed away the working jib. The casualty confirmed that the reason he was in trouble was that he had not sailed before and his intentions had been to sail from Rhyl to Holyhead. He had no idea of where he was but thought having seen the Middle Mouse Island that he was off Moelfre Island Moelfre Alb arrived on scene it was decided to start the casualty’s engine and escorted the Yacht with crew member Michael Williams on board in to Amlwch Port where it was safely secured along side an other Yacht and the casualty handed over to local CG both boats returned to station and were re-housed. During the 4 mile passage to Amlwch it was found that the owner's knowledge of seamanship was very little and his behaviour and state of mind was questionable. (Disorientated)

30th April 2000

Requested to launch ILB to a Car stuck in the middle of the channel at Red Wharf Bay. By the time the ILB arrived the owner had abandoned the car and got ashore. Because there was a number of Yachts to come through the channel in to Red Wharf the car had become a danger to navigation Marker buoys were rigged up by the ILB crew to mark the danger area, ILB then returned to station and left the situation to Moelfre mobile. Holyhead Coastguard requested help from Lifeboat Station to mark the area in case the car which was submerged in water could quite possibly cause a disaster if a yacht was to run over the top of it. Even though that possibly in this case there was no danger to life at this point SHS decided that the best step to take was to assist the CG and launch the ILB after consultation with the Coxswain. The car was to he removed from the channel the following day at low water.

20th May 2000

Four local youths rowed out at high water to Moelfre Island, by the time they decided to return the tide had started to ebb.
